NHS Doncaster are funding community based weight management clubs to help overweight and obese children and their families to lose weight. This is part of NHS Doncaster’s three year plan to tackle obesity in the region.
Our primary aim is to raise awareness and we’d like your help promoting these clubs to the local community, so together we can reach out to as many young people as we can who may benefit from this service.
The FREE sessions called ‘Carnegie Clubs’ will be delivered by Carnegie Weight Management (CWM), the leading experts in childhood obesity based at Leeds Metropolitan University. The first round of clubs beginning in Doncaster on Saturday 3rd October, will be aimed at young people aged 11-17 years, who are overweight (BMI<95thcentile**) to attend with their parents/carers.
The Clubs are a 12 week programme combining physical activity and lifestyles classes and will usually take place on a Saturday morning or afternoon for 3.5 hours per week with 3 month follow on support. All participants must be registered with a Doncaster GP. Clubs for children aged 4–10 years will be launched in January 2010.There will be 8 clubs rolled out at different venues across the region per year over the next three years. The Clubs will work to a flexible delivery model moving around and targeting the different areas of Doncaster, as identified through the referral networks and according to demand.
You will shortly be receiving a direct mail pack for the Doncaster Carnegie Clubs with brochures, posters and flyers. We would be very grateful if you could display the information on notice boards, in waiting rooms and in areas that are visited by members of the public; or indeed distribute to colleagues or children and families that may benefit from the service.
In the meantime, please find attached a briefing sheet with details about how you can help young people and families book a place on the clubs.
